چکیده

A 17-year-old girl from Togo with a β-thalassemia maior was seen at an emergency department with high fever, coma, and severe anemia (Hb < 3 g/dL ). No malaria parasites were found on thin film and thick smears in the first few days of the infection. Despite the failure to observe Plasmodium intraerythrocytic forms in the bloodstream, many white blood cells showed brown, birefringent, intracytoplasmic inclusions (thick arrows) consistent with malarial pigment (hemozoin). The detection of intraleucocytic hemozoin with a negative malaria smear has to be considered as strongly suggestive of Plasmodium falciparum infection 1 ( Figure 1 ). Additional blood specimens were analyzed by a pan-human Plasmodium polymerase chain reaction and resulted positives. Further thin films and thick smears were prepared from fingerprick and venipuncture the next day, and they showed visible intraerythrocytic rings. The patient was treated with IV quinine and recovered completely.

Hemozoin Enhances Maturation of Murine Bone Marrow Derived Macrophages and Myeloid Dendritic Cells

Background: Falciparum malaria is a severe health burden worldwide. Antigen presenting cells are reported to be affected by erythrocytic stage of the parasite. Malarial hemozoin (HZ), a metabolite of malaria parasite, has adjuvant properties and may play a role in the induction of immune response against the parasite. Objective: To determine the immunological impact of hemozoin on the capacity ...

Hemozoin Pigment: An Important Tool for Low Parasitemic Malarial Diagnosis

Low parasitemic condition in malaria remains a diagnostic challenge; as the available diagnostic methods failed to detect. Currently, hemozoin (Hz) pigment is gaining attention in the diagnosis of malaria. The major drawback is ease of detection of Hz in routine practice. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the role of Hz pigment and to compare the performance of quantitative buffy coat ass...

Treatment of Malaria Parasitaemia in Infants and their Mothers

Malaria is an infection sustained by three parasites namely: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and Plasmodium ovale. Plasmodium falciparum is the most common and virulent parasite. These parasites are present in different areas of the sub-Saharan African countries and Asia. In 2010, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria resulting in 660,000 deaths and, approximately, two-t...

Artemisinin, an endoperoxide antimalarial, disrupts the hemoglobin catabolism and heme detoxification systems in malarial parasite.

Endoperoxide antimalarials based on the ancient Chinese drug Qinghaosu (artemisinin) are currently our major hope in the fight against drug-resistant malaria. Rational drug design based on artemisinin and its analogues is slow as the mechanism of action of these antimalarials is not clear. Here we report that these drugs, at least in part, exert their effect by interfering with the plasmodial h...
